Development of a seismic design method based on response spectra for building structures

ZHOU Xiyuan, YU Ruifang

Frontiers of Structural and Civil Engineering 2007, Volume 1, Issue 2,   Pages 129-141 doi: 10.1007/s11709-007-0014-2

Abstract: The assumption and problem of the mode-superposition response spectrum method in seismic design code is discussed based on a brief review of the development of the seismic design method for building structures. The scope of application for the classical damping theory is analyzed and the necessity of the research on mode-superposition method for non-classical damping is presented. The progresses on the mode superposition response spectrum theory are discussed. This includes: 1) the complex mode superposition method (in real form) for the non-classically damped linear system and the general calculation formula for the application of code; 2) the complex complete quadratic combination (CCQC) method for the non-classically damped linear system, which is based on the same assumptions as in deducing the complete quadratic combination (CQC) method which is popularly used in seismic design codes of many countries; 3) the complex complete quadratic combination with three components (CCQC3) method, which is a generalization of the CCQC method to the case of multi-components and multiple-support seismic excitations and deducing corresponding method; 4) the approach for calculation of seismic response of the non-classically damped system with overcritical damping and the calculation method of seismic response for the linear system with multiple eigenvalues; 5) the time-dependent CCQC (t) algorithm considering nonstationary earthquake ground motion; 6) an applied and effective method to solve the low order complex vector basis for the large linear non-classically damped system, which can be expediently used in practice to avoid the unknown errors coming from the forced uncoupling method; 7) bringing forward the concept of partial quadratic combination in order to reduce the calculation amount of CQC and CCQC methods, and studying the primary estimation-criterion. The reasonability and applicable scope of these methods are also briefly discussed in this paper.

Simultaneous Screening of 733 Pesticide Residues in Fruits and Vegetables by a GC/LC-Q-TOFMS Combination Technique Article

Engineering 2020, Volume 6, Issue 4,   Pages 432-441 doi: 10.1016/j.eng.2019.08.008

Abstract:

In this paper, we report the construction of two accurate mass databases and the development of a combination detection method that simultaneously screens for 733 pesticide and chemical contaminant multi-residues via high-throughput liquid chromatography (LC)– and gas chromatography (GC)–quadru pole-time-of-flight mass spectrometry (Q-TOFMS). This work demonstrates that electronic mass spectral standards may replace chemical-source standard materials as references through one sample preparation and the combination of GC/LC–Q-TOFMS screening. This cutting-edge technique has also replaced multiresidue determination using targeted detection with non-targeted screening. The pesticide residue types, sensitivity, recovery, and reproducibility of this combination technique are evaluated in eight fruit and vegetable matrices. This technique shows three advantages: ① In comparison with the discovery capability of a single technique, the combination technique shows an improvement of 51.1% (GC–QTOFMS) and 39.6% (LC–Q-TOFMS), respectively; ② the combination technique can satisfy a screening limit lower than 10 μg·kg−1 and meet the requirements of "uniform standards," although some of the pesticide residues could be optimized to further improve screening sensitivity; ③ over 488 pesticides with recoveries between 60%–120% and relative standard deviation (RSD) < 20% at a spiked level of 10 μg·kg−1 were detected with the combination technique in eight different matrices. From 2012 to 2017, this combination technique was applied in an investigation to screen pesticide residues from 1384 sampling locations for 38 138 batched samples covering 18 categories and 134 types of fruits and vegetables obtained from across the mainland of China. After statistical analysis, 533 pesticides in 115 891 determinations were detected, and the regularity of pesticides in the fruits and vegetables sold on the Chinese market was shown.

software for land use regression modeling the spatial distribution of air pollutants using GDAL/OGR library

Xuying Ma, Ian Longley, Jennifer Salmond, Jay Gao

Frontiers of Environmental Science & Engineering 2020, Volume 14, Issue 3, doi: 10.1007/s11783-020-1221-5

Abstract: PyLUR comprises four modules for developing and applying a LUR model. It considers both conventional and novel potential predictor variables. GDAL/OGR libraries are used to do spatial analysis in the modeling and prediction. Developed on Python platform, PyLUR is rather efficient in data processing. Land use regression (LUR) models have been widely used in air pollution modeling. This regression-based approach estimates the ambient pollutant concentrations at un-sampled points of interest by considering the relationship between ambient concentrations and several predictor variables selected from the surrounding environment. Although conceptually quite simple, its successful implementation requires detailed knowledge of the area, expertise in GIS, statistics, and programming skills, which makes this modeling approach relatively inaccessible to novice users. In this contribution, we present a LUR modeling and pollution-mapping software named PyLUR. It uses GDAL/OGR libraries based on the Python platform and can build a LUR model and generate pollutant concentration maps efficiently. This self-developed software comprises four modules: a potential predictor variable generation module, a regression modeling module, a model validation module, and a prediction and mapping module. The performance of the newly developed PyLUR is compared to an existing LUR modeling software called RLUR (with similar functions implemented on R language platform) in terms of model accuracy, processing efficiency and software stability. The results show that PyLUR out-performs RLUR for modeling in the Bradford and Auckland case studies examined. Furthermore, PyLUR is much more efficient in data processing and it has a capability to handle detailed GIS input data.
